I had a beautiful start to 2024, visiting Dubai and Kerala, India for the first time as my son and his bride got married and we brought our families together to celebrate for 10 days.

But things changed on returning home when my doctor called me urgently and said my blood tests revealed that my glucose numbers were high in the diabetic zone, high enough for the endocrinologists to recommend semaglutide injections starting as soon as possible.

I suddenly had a self-identity crisis as what people call “a diabetic” and since I am allergic to seeing blood and anything needle pointed, the expected daily bloody finger pricks and self-administered insulin was my worse nightmare.
I went into denial but before reaching for a sweet biscuit and a Coke, I decided to learn a bit more about diabetes and if there were any alternatives for treatment and how I could stave off the semaglutide for a month or so.

In my journey over the next three months I discovered that there is much that we and society can do.

Increase awareness about the diabetes epidemic
